Southern Veterinary Partners (SVP) is proud to share that Jessica Johnson, Lead Veterinarian of the Dental & Oral Surgery Department at Main Street Veterinary Hospital & Dental Clinic, recently had a paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry (JOVD).
The peer-reviewed, selective journal of record in its field, JOVD is written quarterly for dental scientists, veterinarians, dentists, and veterinary/dental technicians who are engaged in veterinary dental practice. Dr. Johnson’s article, Characterization and classification of keratinized odontogenic cysts in 29 dogs, was accepted without revisions.
Michael Stephan, DVM, and SVP DVM Program Manager, is ecstatic about this milestone for Dr. Johnson.
“This is a really big deal. Though this is a requirement for Board Certification in Dentistry, which is an arduous three-year-plus journey, this article was accepted on its first submission, which almost never happens,” said Dr. Stephan. “We’re very proud of Dr. Johnson and her work at Main Street.”
Co-authored with Kristin Scott, DVM, DAVDC, and Cindy Bell, DVM, DACVP, this research looks at unusual presentation of an odontogenic cyst. The goal of this year and half long research project was to characterize and classify an unusual group odontogenic cyst that keratinizes, resulting in a unique radiographic and clinical presentation.
The acceptance of this paper is a major milestone in her dental education journey, Dr. Johnson said.
“With this, I have completed all the requirements of a residency in veterinary dentistry,” she said. “Only two specialties in veterinary medicine have multiple board exams: dentistry and ophthalmology. My final hurdle is to pass two of four parts of the second, and final board examination which is an 11-hour practical test.”
Dr. Johnson joined the Main Street Veterinary Hospital team in November of 2016. She received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Arkansas and graduated with honors from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008.
