This week we had a chance to chat with Accounts Payable Manager, Roger Lotson. Roger has an intensive career in the accounting field dating back to 2007. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Georgia Southern University.
How did you get to where you are now?
My career in accounting began in 2007 in Savannah, GA, where I worked with small loans. However, in 2009, I started my first job in finance as an accounts payable specialist at a large country club. From there, I worked in healthcare and later with a childcare acquisition company. In between those positions, I owned three personal businesses, one being a Chef/Owner of a catering business that I discontinued in March 2020 due to the pandemic.
How has SVP been instrumental in your development?
The fast-paced, high-volume, data-driven environment has driven me to grow my abilities to manage data, time, and people more efficiently and effectively to succeed and meet the high expectations set by SVP.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by my desire to be a dedicated & reliable servant to my faith, family & community.
Who has served as an inspiration in your life?
My parents, Dr. Roger Lotson, Sr & Charlene Lotson – who are both veterans, educators, ministers & cancer survivors are my greatest inspirations.
My father was a Naval Officer for nearly 30 years, serving as a hospital administrator, moved on to be an Educator and counselor for at-risk youth for 20 more years, and now serves as a local pastor and County Commissioner in my hometown.
My mother served in the Army, moved on to work in the Pentagon for 10+ years, finished her career as a middle school teacher for nearly 20 years, and is now an inspirational speaker for breast cancer awareness.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is a time to reflect on what my ancestors have done to allow me to be where I am. It also serves as a reminder to take full advantage of how far we’ve come but remain aware that we must continue fighting to get where we should be.
What changes have you seen within the industry regarding access to job opportunities for people of color?
Like most industries, there appears to be slow but steady progress in the right direction.
What is your advice to other individuals looking to join the veterinary industry?
The pandemic further highlighted the importance of this industry and how stable it will be for many years to come. Therefore, I believe it will prove to be a strong, viable career path for the foreseeable future.
What impact are you hoping to leave in this industry?
I’m hoping to be the best version of myself to honor those who came before me and provide a more stable platform for those who come after me.
